Another resident of our city said that the symbols were usually given by the gods and were accompanied with an ability of some sort, though he did not know who this mark represented nor what the ability was. I gave everyone some drinks there that made them not need to eat or sleep or do anything else except for dance and sing and have a good time... well, the symbol on your leg kinda works the same way. You just have to will yourself awake or less hungry or physically exhausted and you'll perk right back up.
