Your assumption is correct, in most cases. Sometimes, fertilization occurs externally, through scientific procedures, though that's not really germane to the topic at hand here.

Sex for humans isn't always about reproduction. In fact, more often than not, sex is about the experience - which, unless they're doing it incredibly wrong, people find intensely pleasurable. Which is why I thought you'd be the best choice for this request - you would greatly benefit from the outcome.

So to answer your question - yes. We humans need contraceptive devices to prevent pregnancy during these ... recreational sexual episodes. And not just pregnancy - there are a number of diseases that are spread through sexual contact, and barrier devices like condoms prevent that from happening.
